Video Recording Systems

Queen Elizabeth University Hospital - Immersive Room

Requirements

The Clinical Skills and Simulation team were looking to create an immersive space within the department, to enhance training and teaching in the Heritage seminar room.

The main requirements of the project included:

  • Maintain a flexible multi-purpose teaching space
  • Provide an immersive audio-visual environment for simulation
  • Provide camera and audio recording facilities that are linked back to the main cSkills system within the facility
  • Provision of a simple to operate interface for changing the immersive room scenes
  • Ability for the staff and operators to create and edit video content for their own bespoke scenarios

The Solution

After a successful tender process, cSkills was selected as the preferred solution. We were enlisted to work with the university estates and IT departments, to specify power and IT requirements. The main requirements were discussed, refined and a completely self-contained cSkills network solution was designed and implemented during a 2 week window after the main building contractor had completed their works.

  • To keep the room clear when not in use, 3 x Screen International electric projection screens where chosen that would drop down when use of the immersive room area was required
  • We would be installing the immersive room in a defined area. Screen International allow a custom build service that would ensure the screens were built to the exact dimensions required
  • 3 x Epson ultra short throw projectors with 4000 ANSI lumen brightness were chosen to project images onto the screens
  • An amplifier and speaker system was included in the solution to enhance the overall immersive experience
  • A PTZ camera and 2 x drop down microphones were installed to enable the recording of any scenarios performed in the area. These are linked to the main cSkills recording system in the facility, allowing the immersive room to be viewed and recorded from the other de-brief and control rooms
  • A Windows tablet was provided that allows users to change the immersive room scene via a custom programmed graphic interface
  • A control PC complete with our Camcom Presenter software is availabe in the neighbouring control room, allowing the users to upload newly recorded footage for use in their immersive area

Summary

The Heritage room can now operate in its normal capacity as a general teaching and seminar room, and with the touch of a button, the screens will drop down, creating an instant immersive teaching space.

The user can make use of a large library of pre-recorded footage, but in time they have the ability to record and modify the available scenes in their library, creating a teaching space with a vast range of simulation scenarios.
