University Hospital of Wales – Medical Education Skills Suite

Requirements

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board (UHB) required to implement a camera, recording and streaming system within the newly opened medical education skills suite at the University Hospital of Wales.

The new suite consists of a 4-bedded simulated ward, clinical skills room, teaching room, student briefing area, and control room and cSkills was chosen as the solution to provide live streaming and de-briefing facilities within these areas.

The main requirements of the project included:

  • Provide recording facilities in the various areas including ward area, clinical skills room and a multi purpose teaching room
  • Implement an easy to use system to allow the recording of different areas simultaneously from the central control room and, during busier times, another location within the suite
  • Provide the ability to capture, stream and record a vital signs feed generated from their iSimulate iPad
  • De-brief trainees with video playback, or observe live a simulation, from various points around the suite including dedicated teaching rooms, student briefing area and the clinical skills room

The Solution

Working with the main building contractor and the UHB project management and IT teams, we specified the required power and data cabling which would be required to meet the client’s requirements prior to installation, and provided first fix cabling and bracketry installation during the main build process ensuring a clean finish

Below is a summary of the key simulation and training areas:

  • Student Briefing Area – features a 65” touch screen connected to a cSkills Streamer (for live viewing and playback)
  • Teaching Room – features dual 65” displays, a touch screen and a non-interactive display. Local laptop connection points allow presentations to be shown on either display with a cSkills Streamer providing the option to live view or playback alongside a presentation
  • 4-bed Ward Area – features 3 x PTZ cameras allowing a variety of views and angles of the ward area and nurses station. Audio capture is provided by a combination of gooseneck ceiling microphones, feeding back to dedicated audio mixers. An input point is provided at each bedside to provide the ability to connect a vital signs feed
  • Clinical Skills Room – features a single PTZ camera and ceiling mounted boundary microphones to capture exercises and sessions that take place in the room. A cSkills streamer was installed and connected to an existing LED display to allow the room to be used for live streaming and playback
  • 2nd Teaching Room – features a single PTZ camera and ceiling mounted boundary microphones to capture exercises and sessions that take place in the room. A cSkills streamer was installed and connected to an existing LED display to allow the room to be used for live streaming and playback
  • Control Room – features a cSkills control laptop and 43” wall mounted display where an operator can observe, invoke recordings and operate the cameras throughout the suite. A talkback microphone allows communication to the ward area via a speaker in that area

Summary

The system in place now provides a flexible and easy way to record, view live, and playback to aid in simulation and training throughout the medical education skills suite. Various camera groups (up to 4 cameras or streams) where set up initially for each room, the streams of which can be viewed in full screen or a quad split.

cSkills is an IP based system, so changing or adding to the streams that are available within a group is a straightforward process. This provides a great degree of future proofing and flexibility allowing the system to adapt and change as the needs of the suite evolve.
